Grand Tableau Spread
The Grand Tableau is the most comprehensive reading in Lenormand — the entire 36-card deck laid out at once in a 9×4 grid. Every card sits in a numbered house with its own meaning, and the reading is built from each card's position, its neighbours, and its distance from your significator. The deepest, most detailed reading in tarot or Lenormand.

What is the Grand Tableau?
The Grand Tableau (French for "great table") is the iconic Lenormand spread — a layout that uses every card in the deck. The 36 cards are dealt into a 9×4 grid: nine columns wide, four rows deep. Each of the 36 cells is its own "house" with its own meaning, traditionally numbered 1 to 36 in card order. The card that lands in House 1 (Rider's House) speaks of news; the card that lands in House 24 (Heart's House) speaks of love; and so on through the deck.
This is the deepest, most layered reading in Lenormand — far beyond a 3-card or 5-card line. It's traditionally drawn for life-overview readings, big questions, and significant moments rather than day-to-day check-ins.
How to Read a Grand Tableau
A full Tableau reading is its own art and could fill a book, but the basic moves are:
- 1Find your significator — usually the Man (28) for a male querent or the Woman (29) for a female querent. This card anchors the reading.
- 2Read the card in each house — the meaning is "card energy in house energy". For example, Heart in the Coffin's house suggests an ending in love; Sun in the Mountain's house suggests joy held back by an obstacle.
- 3Read neighbours — each card is shaded by the cards directly above, below, left, and right. These are read as Lenormand combinations.
- 4Note distance from the significator — cards close to your significator are immediate; far away are distant or future.
- 5Watch for mirroring and knighting — advanced techniques where cards reflect across the layout or jump in a knight's move from the significator.
The 36 Houses
Each cell in the Grand Tableau corresponds to the matching card in the deck — House 1 is "Rider's House" and carries the Rider's energy (news, swift movement); House 36 is "Cross's House" and carries the Cross's energy (burden, destiny). Use the card library to read the full meaning of any card name that surfaces in your reading.
